AT THE Khan El-Maghrabi
Gallery in Zamalek Youssef Francis – veteran writer, artist,
illustrator and filmmaker – shows recent works, large oil paintings
depicting winter. His trademark female figures and faces have been
abandoned in favour of an impassioned depiction of the sea, in which,
paradoxically, he still paints women who this time assume the guise of
mermaids.
At the Salama Gallery in Mohandessin, on the other hand, two
well-established academics exhibit their work. Farouq Shehata and Hazim
Fathallah exhibit lithographs as well as black-and-white and
multicoloured paintings which together constitute an unusually refreshing
and upbeat experience.

There are already signs in the air that summer is upon us, as I
was thinking the other day when I received an invitation to attend
the inauguration by Culture Minister Farouk Hosni of Youssef
Francis's 13th exhibition, entitled Wind & Sea, at Gallery
Grant.
The 13 portraits revolves around Francis's favourite
themes: women, men and nature. At the corner of one of his big
portraits, Gandhi features clearly. Leading comedian Adel
Imam, renowned actress Laila Fawzi and actor Hisham
Abdel-Hamid made sure to attend. The exhibtion will run daily
till 3 April.
