Muslims should forget Qur'an Jihad verses

By: Shawky F. Karas

I read the article titled, "Qur'an describes vision for a united world" by Abdul Majid Karem Hassan. He based his article on the Mecca Qur'an. The Qur'an consists of two sections: the Mecca section and the Medina section. The verses in the Mecca section were uttered by Mohamed when he was in the city of Mecca and surrounded by Jews and Christians. The Mecca verses were benign to Jews and Christians.

The Christians and Jews opposed him when he declared his prophet-hood. Consequently, he escaped to Medina (or Yathrob). Mohamed formed an army and conquered Mecca. At that time, he uttered the Medina verses. The following are examples of such verses without comment. They are self-explanatory:

1. "Fight those who believe not in God nor the last day. ... Nor acknowledge the religion of truth (even if they are) of the people of the Book, until they pay Jizya (taxes) with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." Surah 9:29.
2. "But, when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay pagans whenever ye find them and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie and wait (ambush) for them in very stratagem (of war); but if they repent and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity then open the way for them." Surah 9:5 (see also Surah 2:193).
3. "The Jews call Uzair a son of Allah, and the Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouths; (in this) they but imitate what the believers (infidels) of old used to say. Allah's curse be on them: How they are deluded away from the truth!" Surah 9:30.
4. "O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors. They are but friends and protectors of each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is one of them. Verily Allah guided not a people unjust." Surah 5:54.

All the Muslim scholars indicate that the Medina verses should supercede the Mecca verses. The overwhelming majority of Muslims follow such an interpretation. The Medina verses have been used as the basis for non-Muslim persecution in Islamic countries. However, very few liberal Muslims have advised that they forget the war (Jihad) verses. Unfortunately, those liberals who do so have been assassinated by the Muslim fundamentalists.

Such teachings cannot describe a vision for a united world as Hassan assumed.

I hope that Hassan can advise his fellow Muslims to forget the Median verses or Holy War (Jihad) and follow the Mecca verses.
