The ISHR was founded in 1972 in Germany as a not-for profit organization independent of political parties, governments and religious groups. Since 1982 the society has expanded around the world and now has 32 National Sections on five continents. The activities of the ISHR are based primarily on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Human Rights in China (HRIC) is an international non-governmental organization founded by Chinese scientists and scholars in March 1989.
