THE MASSACRE OF COPTS IN EGYPT
We write today to express our grave concern regarding the bloody massacre of eight Coptic Christians. They were tragically killed following a Christmas Eve service in the town of Naga Hamady in Qena province, Egypt.
A gunman accompanied by two others drove by the church opening fire on the worshipers as they exited the service. Thousands of mourners in Naga Hamady that turned out to show their support during the funeral procession were sprayed by tear gas by government officials.
There have been many recent incidents of massacres and persecution of Christian Copts by Muslim fundamentalist. These same fundamentalist groups are the ones who assassinated the late President Sadat, killed the foreign tourists in Sharm El Sheik and continue to attack locals in upper Egypt and tourists in the various resort areas. These extremists are coming from outside of Egypt and are organized and funded by the Muslim extremists in the neighboring Muslim countries.
Recent similar massacres have occurred in town of Farshooot, Bahgoura, and Sanbu. Coptic Christians comprise approximately 14 millions of Egypt’s populations and are an integral part of Egyptian society. There has been systematic pattern of violence against Egypt’s Coptic Christian population.
We are calling upon the US government and International Human Rights Organizations to intercede on behalf of the Coptic Christian Minority in Egypt and to help the Moderate Egyptian Officials stop the persecution of Copts and the bloodshed. We are calling upon the respect of religious freedom. Stop the discrimination practices affecting the Coptic community, including the difficulty in building and repairing churches, poor representation in certain government bodies, and security harassment of converts. We are also requesting the facilitation of immigration practices for Christian Copts requesting to leave the country in fear of further violence and discrimination
